- All characters start with the
following default skills:
- Speak native language at rank 8,
- Speak Common at rank 6 (8 if native
tongue),
- Horsemanship, Stealth, Drinking, Shield,
and Rock at rank 0.

Characters start with some Skills
due to Upbringing:
- Burgher or Farmer:
One craft at rank 0.
- Merchant: Merchant
rank 2; speak Common 8; speak another language 4.
- Merchant Prince:
Merchant rank 1; Courtier rank 1; speak Common 8; speak
another language 4; Steward 1.
- Craftsman: One
craft at rank 2.
- Adventurer:
Horsemanship 2; Troubador, Spy, or Ranger at rank 2, or
rank 1 in two of the skills.
- Bandit: Gambling
1; Stealth 1; Thief rank 2 or Thief rank 1 and Ranger
rank 1.
- Pirate: Gambling
1; Seahand 2, or Seahand 1 and Navigator 1.
- Lesser Nobility:
Courtier rank 1; Steward 1; Horsemanship 1.
- Greater Nobility:
Courtier rank 1; Military Scientist rank 1; Horsemanship
1.
All characters begin with two
social contacts and a familiarity of their home location at rank
4.
Adventurers and Pirates start out with 2 other
location familiarities at rank 2 (see 105).
